The ‘Calarcá’ case confirms the risk of institutional capture and co-optation, and the weakening of national security

From the Instituto de Ciencia Política (ICP), we warn that the allegations revealed by Noticias Caracol regarding alleged relations between the EMBF of the FARC dissidents and high-ranking State officials confirm an accelerated process of institutional capture and co-optation, undermine the State’s capacities, and threaten national security, institutional independence, and the exercise of political opposition.

We call on Congress to exercise immediate political oversight, urge the Office of the Inspector General to move swiftly in advancing the investigations, and exhort the governments of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union to remain vigilant, investigate, and sanction—according to their laws—the officials who may have facilitated the expansion of criminal structures dedicated to drug trafficking toward their countries.
